40 pin DIP / CPU breakout / comparison and debugging adapter
I saw this on the Youtube channel "Adrian's Digital Basement", but could not find where to get one. So I created one myself.
This is a great tool for debugging vintage computers or any system with 40-pin chips (or the same form factor like Nano's), or other wide DIP's like 32, 28, and 24 pin. There are a couple ways to use it.
- As a comparison tool. This is handy when the target IC is not socketed. Attach jumpers from the bottom connector to a chip clip, and clip onto the target IC. Insert a copy of the same IC in the tool. The jumpers will parallel the chips -- so remove any that will be output signals (to avoid contention). Then you can attach a scope or logic analyzer to each chip's output and compare their operation. The outside pins also allow connecting to any pins that are still jumpered in parallel.
- As a breakout jig while also allowing you to disconnect individual pins and/or inject your own signals to the target system in place of the IC's signal. Just remove the chip from the target system, plug this in its place, and insert the chip in the socket on this adapter. If needed, stack extra sockets for sufficient board clearance. The outside headers allow attaching pins to a scope or logic analyzer, like a chip clip would. The jumpers on the 2-wide headers for each pin can be removed to disconnect that pin form the circuit -- or you can swap pins, jumper it to ground or Vcc or inject any signal needed for debugging, without modifying the board or the original chip.
Note: Be sure to install the 2 headers on the underside first, since they need to be soldered on the top side, underneath the IC socket!
